Comparison of Local Injection of Platelet Rich Plasma and Corticosteroids in the Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis of Humerus
Raman Yadav, S Y Kothari, Diganta Borah
Summary:
This randomized controlled study compared the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus corticosteroid (methyl-prednisolone) injections in treating lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). Sixty patients were followed for three months, with pain (VAS), grip strength, and function (qDASH) measured at baseline, 15 days, 1 month, and 3 months.
Both treatments led to significant improvements. Corticosteroids showed faster pain relief at 15 days and 1 month, but PRP demonstrated superior outcomes in pain reduction, grip strength, and functional recovery at 3 months. No adverse effects were reported. The findings suggest that PRP provides longer-lasting benefits by promoting tendon healing rather than just temporary symptom relief.
