Summary:
This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and arthroscopic debridement in managing knee osteoarthritis in 70 patients. Results demonstrated that PRP significantly improved pain (VAS scores) and function (WOMAC scores) up to 9 months, especially in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (KL Grade 2). While PRP maintained its benefits longer, arthroscopy showed limited and diminishing effects over time, with no significant improvement beyond 9 months.
The study highlights PRP’s role as a regenerative therapy using growth factors to promote tissue repair and regeneration, showing better overall outcomes compared to arthroscopy. PRP was well-tolerated without significant complications, making it a safe and effective alternative for osteoarthritis management, particularly for patients seeking non-surgical options.
