Summary:
This randomized controlled trial compared the midterm outcomes of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) versus steroid injections for plantar fasciitis in 118 patients who failed conservative therapy. Patients were randomized to receive either PRP or corticosteroid injections and were followed for six months, with pain assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and function assessed via the AOFAS hindfoot score. PRP demonstrated significantly greater reductions in pain at all follow-up intervals (2 weeks to 6 months) and showed superior functional improvement at 6 months compared to steroids.
The PRP group saw a 94.5% reduction in pain versus 79.7% in the steroid group at 6 months, and had a significantly higher mean AOFAS score (95.1 vs. 86.0). Importantly, no complications were reported in either group, and no patients required repeat injections. The study concludes that PRP is a more effective and safer alternative to steroid injections for sustained pain relief and functional recovery in plantar fasciitis.
