Is Platelet-rich Plasma Injection more Effective than Steroid Injection in the Treatment of Chronic Plantar Fasciitis in Achieving Long-term Relief?
Soraganvi P, Nagakiran KV, Raghavendra-Raju RP Anilkumar D, Wooly S, Basti BD, Janakiraman P
Summary:
This double-blind, randomized study conducted at PES Institute of Medical Sciences in India compared the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus corticosteroid injections in 60 patients with chronic plantar fasciitis. Both groups showed initial improvement in pain and function, but the PRP group demonstrated continuous improvement over time. At six months, patients treated with PRP reported significantly lower pain scores (VAS 1.41 vs. 3.76) and higher functional scores (AOFAS 90.03 vs. 74.67) than those treated with steroids.
The study also showed a greater reduction in plantar fascia thickness in the PRP group (35.45%) compared to the steroid group (29.16%), indicating better tissue healing. While steroid injections offered quicker short-term relief, their benefits diminished after three months. PRP, enriched with growth factors, promoted sustained healing and functional recovery. These findings suggest PRP as a superior, long-term treatment option for patients with chronic plantar fasciitis unresponsive to conservative therapy.
