Summary:
This randomized, single-blinded study from Cairo compared the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus corticosteroids (CS) in treating lumbar facet joint (FJ) synovitis in 30 patients with chronic low back pain. Both treatments resulted in significant improvements in pain, function, range of motion, and MRI-detected inflammation at 3-month follow-up. However, PRP showed greater overall reduction in synovitis severity across all lumbar levels, suggesting stronger biological healing effects.
While both groups experienced pain relief and functional gains, PRP provided more widespread and consistent improvements in MRI-confirmed inflammation. The study supports PRP as a potentially superior option, particularly for patients seeking longer-lasting, regenerative benefits without the side effects associated with corticosteroids.
